Itinerary

Day 1. Thursday We depart and travel to Lockerbie for one night, dinner, bed, and breakfast at the Dryfesdale Country House Hotel (NO LIFT. Limited ground floor bedrooms).

Day 2. Friday After a hearty breakfast, we embark on a scenic journey north, traveling through the awe-inspiring Cairngorms National Park, a vast wilderness at the heart of the Scottish Highlands. As we wind through dramatic mountains, dense forests, and sparkling lochs, you’ll be surrounded by Scotland's most rugged landscapes. Our route then leads us to Inverness, the vibrant capital of the Highlands, where the River Ness meets the Moray Firth. The day concludes with a drive to Ullapool, where we’ll check in for two nights at the Caledonian Hotel. Enjoy a delicious dinner and a restful night’s sleep. (NO LIFT. Limited ground floor bedrooms).

Day 3. Saturday Today is yours to relax and explore the charming fishing town of Ullapool, nestled on the scenic shores of Loch Broom. Step back in time at the Ullapool Museum, where exhibits reveal the area’s rich maritime history, fishing industry, and Gaelic heritage. Nature lovers can enjoy a variety of walking routes - ideal for soaking in the peace and beauty of the Highlands. Alternatively, take to the water with an optional cruise around the picturesque Summer Isles, showcasing dramatic scenery and, on clear days, breathtaking views to the Hebrides. Please note: cruise is not included, is weather dependent, and must be booked in advance.

Day 4. Sunday Today, we journey along the spectacular North Coast Route - Scotland’s answer to Route 66. Departing from the village of Ullapool, we head north, following winding single-track roads toward Durness, the country’s most northwesterly village. This drive offers breathtaking views of rugged coastline, dramatic cliffs, and serene beaches at every turn. Continuing east along the northern edge of mainland Scotland, we’re immersed in the natural beauty of the Highlands. We arrive in the northern village of Castletown and settle into the Castletown Hotel, our base for the next three nights. (NO LIFT. Limited ground floor bedrooms).

Day 5. Monday An early breakfast today as we make our way to Scrabster for the NorthLink Ferries crossing to Stromness, Orkney. The sailing offers stunning coastal views and the chance to spot local wildlife along the way. Upon arrival, we’re joined by a knowledgeable local guide for a memorable day exploring the island. Orkney’s rich Neolithic heritage comes to life through visits to ancient monuments, stone circles, tombs, and settlements - a testament to its UNESCO World Heritage status. Our scenic tour includes many of the island’s main sites, including the 5,000-year-old village of Skara Brae and the beautifully preserved Italian Chapel. Along the way, hear tales of Viking intruders, wartime exploits, local legends, and Orkney’s fascinating maritime past. We return by ferry and continue to the hotel, reflecting on a truly unforgettable experience. Please note: some attractions may incur an additional charge.

Day 6. Tuesday Today we visit the nearby town of Thurso, with free time to explore the North Coast Visitor Centre. Spread across three floors, the centre features a fascinating permanent exhibition that draws from the museum’s collection to tell the story of Caithness - from its ancient geological beginnings in the Devonian period to the present day. Later this afternoon, we continue to John O’Groats, the most northerly point on mainland Britain. This small coastal village is famously known as the starting point for the epic ‘End to End’ journey to Land’s End in Cornwall, some 876 miles to the south. Set in a remote and dramatic landscape, John O’Groats offers stunning coastal views, unspoiled scenery, and a chance to spot a variety of wildlife in its natural Highland habitat.

Day 7. Wednesday
Today, we bid farewell to Castletown and begin our scenic journey south, retracing our route along Scotland’s stunning east coast. As we travel, we pass through the historic city of Inverness and continue through the breathtaking landscapes of Aviemore and the Cairngorms National Park - an area famed for its dramatic peaks, ancient forests, and wildlife. Soak in the ever-changing views from the comfort of the coach as we wind our way toward the Borders region. Our destination for the night is Lockerbie, where we check in to the charming Dryfesdale Country House Hotel for dinner, bed, and breakfast. (NO LIFT. Limited ground floor bedrooms).
