Itinerary

Day 1. Saturday We depart this morning and journey to the historic city of Durham for time at leisure. Perched on a dramatic peninsula, Durham enchants visitors with its cobbled streets, striking skyline, and the awe-inspiring sight of Durham Cathedral and Castle, both proudly overlooking the River Wear. Rich in medieval charm yet alive with modern energy, the city blends centuries of heritage with contemporary culture. Take time to wander its winding lanes, browse independent shops, or relax in one of its many inviting cafés and museums. A stroll along the riverside offers picture-perfect views and a true taste of Durham’s tranquil beauty. Later this afternoon, we continue the short distance to Washington, checking in at the Holiday Inn Washington. This evening, enjoy a three-course evening meal.

Day 2. Sunday Following breakfast, we begin our journey home via Carlisle, a vibrant border city rich in history, with a striking cathedral and imposing castle. We’ll enjoy a short break here before boarding the train from Carlisle to the charming market town of Settle. This iconic route forms part of the famous Settle - Carlisle Railway, the last mainline railway built in the UK, completed in 1876 by the Midland Railway Company after six years of construction. Widely regarded as one of the best-engineered mainline tracks in England, the line is visually dramatic and offers a truly memorable and scenic journey through the heart of the countryside. On arrival in Settle, you will be met by the coach and continue your journey home. Sit back, relax, and reflect on the stunning landscapes, and memorable experiences.

Railway is operated by a diesel locomotive and not a steam train.

Excursion days are subject to change and will be confirmed with your final travel documents.
